

And twenty times I've patiently explained that they’ll get free play on the last day before Christmas holidays. This boy had noticed it on the first day and has asked at least twenty times when we get to "play" on the iPads. I left it on for this school year just to see what would happen.

On the last day of school in June, I had loaded the World of Goo app onto the iPads for free play. I'm really liking this blog idea!Īnd today I probably overreacted but I banned a boy from the iPads tomorrow.

And a couple parents also added comments. I hadn't asked them to, they just did it. It felt a little ridiculous missing the third day of school I probably had the ignominy of being the first teacher to book a sub! But, anyways, when I checked my email on the weekend, several of my students had blogged about not having iPads at school because I was away. I had to take last Friday off to bring my son back to University. It was quick and easy, much better than last week. So, today when we had to have a class vote, a couple of them suggested using PollEverywhere. I think the difference is that this year, I tried doing several polls in a row and they just got bored. The other thing that I discovered is that the students weren't as thrilled with PollEverywhere as they were last year. The problem is that I was trying to show another teacher how great it was to be able to display the iPad on the SmartBoard, and of course, it didn't work. I should have tried one more! Everything is working fine now. It turns out that both iPads I tried just needed to be rebooted every other iPad worked. First, I thought that my switchbox wasn't working properly because two iPads I used to display didn't connect. I also discovered two other things last week. We did SpellBoard again today and it went so much quicker. I received many positive email comments about that. On Friday, when they took the test officially, we emailed the results to their parents. Luckily, I had a visiting teacher who helped out. It's so much easier to lead the students through when they can see it onscreen. I forgot how long it takes the first time! Especially because SpellBoard is the first app I've come across that doesn't display on the SmartBoard. Tried out SpellBoard for the first time last week. That way he isn't only naming objects he already knows the word for. Another teacher has offered to let him video her students as they name objects for him to say. He would video things, like a hat, and then say it in English. He said hi to every kid he met in the hall and even asked them the occasional question. When I watched it later, I realized that he spoke so much more while videoing. I had asked him to video the class with his iPad and he ended up wandering out the door with it and down the hall. This was so much easier.Īnd, finally, the last good idea I want to share involves my ESL student and it happened accidentally. I tried it last year with my classroom desktop but it was too complicated for them to be able to do independently. They recorded themselves and emailed it to me. So one of the independent activities required them to name a number given to them in standard form. My math is structured similar to Guided Reading in LA, in that I'm usually working with one group while the rest work independently. I also had the students try out QuickVoice during math.
